Associate Sheila Amiry recently served as a justice at Northern Illinois University's Second Preliminary Round of the 27th Annual Moot Court competition. The two issues presented for the Court's review in this year's competition were:
1. What standard should be used to determine whether the First Amendment protects speech communicated by a public school teacher in the classroom?
2. Are specialty motor vehicle license plates issued by a state government subject to viewpoint neutrality restrictions imposed by the First Amendment?
Sheila was impressed with this year's competition and enjoyed the lively debate surrounding important First Amendment issues.
Associate Amiry was asked to judge the competition due to her extensive involvement in the Moot Court Society during law school. Sheila not only competed in the Illinois Appellate Lawyers Association 2007 Moot Court competition but also was a finalist in the 25th Annual NIU College of Law Moot Court Competition. During her final year in law school, she served as an Associate Justice for the Moot Court Society.
